June 2024 Newsletter

nnetzley

Wow, how did it get to be the second week of June already? Here's a quick read list of  what we have going on, with details below.

  • Alma Library Friends meeting time is permanently changed to 4:30 p.m. on the fourth Thursday of the month

  • Curtis Dancer, Alma's finance director, will be our guest at the June 27th meeting to talk all things library financing

  • Volunteers needed to review adult programming ideas

  • Staff appreciation

  • Evening in the Park on June 18th will feature local writers, (including me)

New meeting time for Alma Library Friends

By popular vote at the May meeting, we changed the meeting time to 4:30 p.m. to avoid conflicts for ALF members who are part of the Wright House Restoration effort. That group also meets on Thursdays. We want everyone to be able to attend both meetings if they like.

Special guest for our June meeting

Curtis Dancer will be at our meeting to explain the funding sources for the library, how stable the funding is, and what the financial outlook is for the library in the coming fiscal year, which begins July 1. I don't think most of us really know how library funding works. As Library Friends, we really should. This is a great opportunity to find out. If you can't come but have a question you'd like answered, let me know and I'll pass it on.

More adult programs for the library

Morgan Most, Alma's new Parks and Recreation coordinator, is hard at work now on programs for the parks, but this fall and winter she'll be able to direct her attention to helping us try a few adult-centered programs to see which ones fly. We're in need of a few good Friends to serve on a committee to go over the list of ideas we've come up with to date.  The committee (with input from the Library and from Morgan) will choose the most feasible to try in terms of time and resources and we'll go from there. If you're willing to volunteer (and I hope a few of you are) please let me know.

If you'd like to see all the new programs at our parks, you can check out the City of Alma Parks and Recreation page on Facebook, or visit the community calendar online at https://www.gogratiot.com/alma.

We love our library staff, and we want them to know it

We're so lucky to have such a smart, dedicated, and creative staff at our library. To show our appreciation, we  voted to purchase $10 gift certificates from Ballyhoo Books & Brew, to be given to staff members on their birthdays.

A brief self-serving (but not totally) announcement

Tuesday, June 18th at 7 p.m. the Evening in the Park event at Wright Park will be Writers at Wright. Local children's author M.D. LaBelle, Bill Meiners from the Gratiot County Herald, writers from Alma College, and me are on the program. I'd love to see you there.

That's it for now. Remember from this time forward our Alma Library Friends regular meeting schedule is 4:30 p.m., the fourth Thursday of the month (June 27th this month) at the library. As always, hit reply to this email or call me at 989-620-0272 if you have questions, concerns, or thoughts to share.
